Packing a suitcase has a become a major part of my life lately. I’ve always been good at it, but as I’m doing it almost nightly now, I’m becoming an expert and I want to share some of my tips with you! The goal is to make the most out of your space. Whether you’re the type of person who knows exactly what they want to wear for each day or the kind who needs seven different options at all times, you’ll be ready to head out on your next adventure with these guidelines.
1. Roll. Your. Clothes.
If you haven’t already started doing this, I’m about to change your life. Rolling your clothes makes everything smaller and more manageable when packing. It also leaves more room to organize, which is key if you’re going on a longer trip. Fold your clothes however you normally would, then take one end and roll it up into a little log. Look how tiny it is?! You could bring half your closet with you! This is the first step to master-level packing.
2. Pack toiletries in the spaces in between
While it’s nice to have one bag with all your toiletries, it takes up more space than necessary to do so. By separating your toiletries out, you can fit them into the little nooks and crannies in your suitcase. Make sure to put anything that could leak under pressure in a Ziploc bag, though. You don’t want to arrive to any messy surprises.
3. Bring backups.
My mom used to always make me pack extra underwear. It was really annoying to me as a child because I thought I was invincible. But as an adult, I can see this advice for what it truly is: learned wisdom. Just do it. You never know what could happen. This goes for Ziploc bags as well. It’s always good to have a spare.
4. Opt for outfits you love.
If you’re struggling with what to bring, choose the things you know you feel great wearing. Obviously you have to keep the weather in mind, but the more of your favorite outfits you can bring, the better chance you have of feeling like a rockstar each day that you’re gone
5. Don’t get shoe crazy.
This is the hardest one for me. I love my shoes. I love having a variety of shoes to fit my mood. I love being able to dress an outfit up at a moment’s notice. But I do not love carrying around a 50 pound bag, so I had to make choices. I suggest a pair of shoes you’re comfortable wearing everyday, a pair of sneakers, and – if you think the occasion might arise – one pair of dressier shoes. Find what works best for you and definitely cater your choice to the length of your trip.
6. Layers are your friend.
I highly recommend bringing base pieces and then layering over because you can change your look every day with a new base, while only packing a handful of bigger, bulkier layers. This is also great if you have to deal with seasonal changes or other weather related weirdness.
7. Wear your biggest items.
If you’ve got a chunky sweater that’s giving you grief, throw it on the day of. It’ll free up a little room. Besides, planes are always cold anyway! The same goes for bulky footwear. I always wear my boots on travel day, since packing them would be a nightmare. It may not give you back much space, but every little bit counts!
These tips will help you to maintain your fashionista wardrobe on the go. You can optimize your space and your choices and look your best no matter where you go!
Here’s to loving your look!
