Today I want to talk about something I always notice as the weather starts to get warm. Crop tops reemerged as a trend in the past few years and I’m definitely a fan. In fact, crop tops make up a lot of my wardrobe, particularly during the summer. But there are rules to crop tops, ladies. We all know there are some rules that are made to be broken, but these ones are mostly made to keep you from looking trashy instead of trendy. I present The Crop Top Commandments:
1. Thou shalt not wear a crop top that is too short to cover your boobs all the way.
As a bustier girl, I know this can be a struggle, but if you’re going to do the flowy boho chic look, you have to make sure you find a top long enough to be a top. Underboob is a no-no.
2. Thou shalt not wear a crop top that is so loose anyone below you knows what your bra looks like.
Again, this struggle can be tough for us busty gals, but try something that ties at the waist. And if you can’t find one you like, grab a t-shirt and some scissors and make your own!
3. Thou shalt not use the crop top trend as an excuse to be naked.
This is not the trend. I repeat, naked is not the trend. Crop tops are the trend and they are not designed to leave you looking like you couldn’t afford the rest of your shirt.
4. Thou shalt not wear a crop top a size too small for emphasis.
Sometimes it’s hard to dress to your proportions, but much like commandment 3, the one-size-too-small look doesn’t do you any favors. It just makes you look like you don’t understand your body. No matter what you wear, flattering your body type will always be better than trying to conform to the trend at hand.
5. Thou shalt not wear crop tops with low rise jeans or shorts.
Back to the naked thing, don’t do it. Crop tops are meant to be paired with high waisted bottoms. There can be some space between the two, but we’re talking a couple inches, not your whole abdomen. The idea is to change where your clothing hits thou for a more flattering line, not to be naked in public.
There are exceptions to every rule, of course, but these ones are pretty tried and true. So as we head into warmer weather, sport those crop tops as much as you like, but don’t forget what the trend is (and isn’t). Thou shalt not ruin it for the rest of us!
Here’s to loving your look!
